The Myth of Tanning – Why Your Skin’s “Healthy Glow” Might Actually Be a Cry for Help

Right, let’s talk tanning. You’ve probably heard it before – “I look so much healthier with a tan” or “I just need a bit of colour, I’m too pale.”Well… brace yourself… that “healthy glow” is actually your skin having a mild meltdown.
When you tan, what’s really happening is your body going into emergency mode. Your skin’s largest organ (yes, your skin is an organ – the biggest one you own!) is under attack from UV rays, and your clever body is pumping out melanin to try and protect you.
Melanin 101
Melanin is that magical pigment that gives our skin its colour. Its job? To absorb UVB rays and stop them from frying your DNA. Think of it as your skin’s little army running up to the front line shouting, “Don’t worry, we’ve got this!” But here’s the problem – it’s damage control, not prevention. It only stops some of the UVB damage, and the UVA rays – the ones responsible for ageing, collagen breakdown, and those charming little sun spots – still sail right through and carry on causing havoc deep in your skin.
Why We Feel So Good With a Tan
Here’s the thing – one of the reasons we feel fabulous after a bit of sun is because UVB exposure triggers the production of Vitamin D in our bodies. And Vitamin D is amazing – it supports bone health, boosts immunity, and yes, it can give your mood a little lift.
But here’s the catch: you don’t need to roast yourself like a Sunday chicken to get it. If you read my previous blog, you’ll remember my mum’s “weathered” tip – go outside in the early morning before the sun is strong, sunscreen on your face (always), but let your arms and legs have a little sunshine for no longer than 10 minutes. That way you get the Vitamin D boost without giving your skin a one-way ticket to Damage Town.
“Natural Glow-Down” Chat
Interestingly, a new trend on TikTok - the Natural Glow-Down - is actually a step in the right direction. Basically, it’s embracing your natural skin tone, keeping it protected, and focusing on skin health rather than chasing that holiday bronze.Honestly? I’m here for it. Less skin damage, fewer fine lines later, and you still look fabulous.
Let’s Bust the “Glass Skin” Myth While We’re Here
While we’re on skin trends, can we talk about this whole unrealistic beauty trend doing the rounds “Glass Skin” thing?
Real skin has pores.
Skin has texture. Even the healthiest skin will have tiny lines, freckles and variations.
Filters and editing, makes "glass skin" appear possible, but in real life it's an illusion.
It sometimes gets the odd blemish, pigmentation, or dryness. The idea that your skin should look like a pane of glass is about as realistic as me turning up to work without at least three cups of coffee in me.
Full Disclosure – I’m the Biggest Hypocrite
Yes… I have a tan. But before you throw your SPF bottle at me – in my defence, I’m Greek, and with my scandalous (Scandi + Hellenic) DNA, even slathered in factor 50 I end up with colour. This weekend while gardening, I may have accidentally joined the latest TikTok trend… tan lines. Oops. Apparently, it’s a “thing” now – but I’m still calling it what it is: patchy UV damage in a stripy pattern.
If you read one of my previous blogs, you’ll know my Greek heritage means I was practically raised in “repair mode” – olive oil on my hair and skin, tomatoes rubbed into my skin if i had been in the sun too long and as a kid I smelt like a walking Greek salad. Maybe that’s why my skin bounces back, but it doesn’t mean I can get away with skipping SPF or skincare… and neither can you.
So, What’s the Real Secret to Healthy Glowing Skin?
It’s not a tanning bed, it’s not baking yourself in the garden with baby oil (please no!), and it’s not chasing impossible “glass skin” perfection. It’s:
Eating well – your skin needs vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats to repair and protect itself.
Staying hydrated – water is your skin’s best friend.
Daily protection – SPF every. single. day. Yes, even in winter. Yes, even in the UK.
Using skincare that works in the dermis, not just the surface – that’s where AlumierMD comes in. Their formulations actually support your skin where it counts, helping to strengthen, protect, and repair from within.
Your skin is clever. It’s working 24/7 to keep you safe. So, instead of forcing it into crisis mode with UV damage, give it the love and support it needs. Feed it well, hydrate it, protect it, and use products that treat it with respect.
Trust me – the glow you get from looking after your skin properly will beat a tan any day… and it doesn’t come with the wrinkles, pigmentation. WIN WIN
