Let’s talk about January. Cold. Dark. Long. The month that feels like it’s been going on since 2019. Christmas is packed away, the decorations are gone, and suddenly everyone’s telling you to “be your best self”, start a new diet, join a gym, drink green juice, and reinvent your entire life by the 3rd of January.
No thank you.
What if, instead of fighting January, we lean into it?
And no — before anyone panics — I don’t mean that kind of lean. This is not a new diet, there are no scales involved, and absolutely no one is asking you to give up carbs. This is leaning emotionally, not nutritionally.
Reframing January (because mindset is everything)
January isn’t here to punish us. It’s here to slow us down. It’s the pause button after the chaos of December. And honestly? If we change how we think about it, January can be quite lovely.
Think about it…
Getting into your PJs ridiculously early (bonus points if they’re fluffy)
Snuggling under a blanket that could legally be classed as a duvet
Watching box sets without guilt because “it’s dark anyway”
Long, hot bubble baths where your skin resembles a prune but your soul feels healed
A face mask on, hair scraped back, glass (or two) of fizz in hand 🍾
That, my lovely, is not laziness. That is self-care with purpose.
Give yourself a ‘sap’ evening (and yes, let me explain 😌)
Before anyone asks — sap isn’t some new wellness trend you’ve missed while blinking. Although, let’s be honest, it does sound like something I’ve invented to look trendy… “Yes, I’m very into sap evenings at the moment.” Expect it to be everywhere by next winter 😌 I simply mean an evening where you’re allowed to be a bit… soft. A bit slow. A bit unapologetically unproductive.
No hustle. No pressure. No pretending you’re thriving when you’re actually just tired.
A sap evening is comfort clothes, comfort food, comfort TV and doing absolutely nothing useful — and enjoying every second of it.
Because here’s the thing… in a few weeks’ time, the evenings will be lighter, the days longer, and suddenly we’ll all be “too busy” again. So why not take advantage now?
Winter is basically giving us permission to rest – and we should probably listen.
Dry January? Not in this house 🍷
Now, while we’re here… let’s talk about Dry January.
I’ll be honest — I don’t agree with it. Not because I’m anti-health (clearly), but because January is already bleak enough without removing one of life’s simple pleasures.
Also, our pubs are struggling — and January is one of the hardest months for them. So I like to think I’m doing my bit for the economy with the occasional drink or two. Public service, really.
Whether it’s a glass of something cosy at home or a lovely Sunday drink out with a proper Sunday roast, I’m very much team moderation, enjoyment, and warmth.
Winter food = comfort food (and that’s a good thing)
January is not the month for salads pretending to be meals.
It’s the season of:
Roast dinners
Stews that have been bubbling all day
Pie and mash
All the proper winter warmers
And let’s not forget dessert — apple pie, crumble, and custard (always custard, never negotiable).
This is the time to enjoy food that warms you from the inside out — not punish yourself for being human.
Skin loves January too
Your skin actually quite likes this slower pace. Less rushing, more routine. More hydration, more nourishment, more TLC.
January is the perfect time for:
Hydrating masks
Rich moisturisers
Gentle treatments
Letting your skin recover after Christams excess (cheese, fizz, late nights – we see you)
Think of this month as a reset, not a restart. No extreme measures required.
A gentle reminder
You don’t need to overhaul your life in January. You don’t need a new body, a new face, or a new personality.
What you might need is:
More rest
More kindness to yourself
More warmth (emotional and actual – it’s freezing)
So light a candle, put the kettle on (or open the fizz), pop on that face mask, and enjoy this season for what it is.
Spring will come soon enough… and we’ll miss these cosy nights when it does.
Until then – embrace the fluff, the fizz, and the slow.
Love, Alison 💙
