Save the oceans while protecting your skin!

So, most of you are aware I have just got back from an amazing holiday in St Lucia where I spent most of my time relaxing, drinking cocktails and also a lot of time snorkelling. There was such an array of colourful fish and sea life and one time I saw a very large Red Cushion Starfish (which my husband and friends we met (D&P), thought was a figment of my imagination when we couldn’t find it) But it got me thinking how lucky we are to have all this amazing ocean life so easily accessible to us and how glad I was I choose a ‘REEF FRIENDLY’ sunscreen!

Most of us don’t think about or may be haven’t heard of ‘REEF SAFE’ products when considering sunscreen. Our first thought (and rightly so) is to protect our skin from the damaging UV Rays. So, with holiday season underway I thought this would be the ideal time to ask you all to consider ‘REEF SAFE’ sunscreens when you next purchase your SPF.

Even if you’re not having a beech holiday, it’s still worthwhile selecting Reef Safe products. Consider swimming in rivers and lakes or even general showering (these chemicals are not removed during water treatment process) will still wash off the sunscreen and as we know rivers end up in the ocean. So, it’s still worth considering purchasing ‘REEF SAFE’ sunscreens.

For those who may not be aware of ‘REEF SAFE or REEF FRIENDLY’ sunscreens, there are a few things to look out for.

Products should contain nano particles (a smaller particle size) and traditional zinc oxide mineral sunscreens. These are both safe and effective at protecting your skin and both are considered safe for reefs.

You should look to avoid products that contain the UV filters Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. These can be harmful to coral reefs as they can cause coral bleaching which eventually leads to the destruction of the reefs.

The only difference between Reef Safe and other sunscreens is the cosmetic feel on the skin. Mineral sunscreens are much nicer to apply and don’t leave the skin clogged up with white chalky film. So you're pretty much good to go with a mineral-based option.

If your unsure where and what to get, please send me a message. I will be able to advise the best SPF for the whole family. We offer a wide range of Reef Safe sunscreens in the clinic. As with all our skincare, it’s all clean science, green and recyclable.
